UK’s first Mindsphere Lounge launches at Sheffield University

By anna_g

“This is the future”, the opening words from Keith Burnett Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sheffield describing the launch of the new Mindsphere Lounge in the world in partnership with Siemens.

MindSphere is an open, cloud-based IoT operating system from Siemens that connects machines and physical infrastructure to the digital world. It allows the harness of big data from billions of intelligent devices. The use of data analytics, connectivity capabilities, tools for developers, applications and services, MindSphere helps companies exploit the full potential of their data and transform it into measurable business success.

The opening of the Mindsphere lounge is another step in Siemens long history with the city of Sheffield, which dates back over 150 years to when the city was producing more than 85 percent of the UK’s steel. This will become a physical focal point for students, local businesses and other digital partners to collaborate and the lounge will represent a living lab. The university will link estate and research assets to support the academic curriculum and R&D, allowing students to meet, think and discover using the power of MindSphere in the areas of manufacturing, water and energy.

By opening up this new lounge at a university it will “change the way we work in education” – one of the inspirational comments made during the panel discussion. This was followed by more statements about the business world in a cross-boundary/cross-disciplinary/cross-organizational way and the fact that people need to understand the technology that allows this. This led to more conversation around the need for digital skills and how this was absolutely necessary to be taught in universities and will lead to graduates gaining high level jobs from the outset. Watch this space for more developments at the University of Sheffield and other educational institutions around the world.
