Manufacturing CoE in India Addresses Future Digital Talent
Industry 4.0 is improving manufacturing productivity, simultaneously increasing the demand for digital talent. How does academia address the challenges of bridging the skills gap in Industry 4.0? Industry 4.0 differs from previous industrial revolution in a way, where education for digital talent is concurrent with industry requirement.
The Siemens Center of Excellence (CoE) in Manufacturing, was set-up at National Institute of Technology (NIT), Tircuhirappalli (Trichy) to create a robust eco-system of technical education through Siemens experience in industrial product development. This center bridges gap between industry requirements and technical education and provides solutions that makes technical institutes more aligned with industry needs, as a result making students industry ready. 
In the past year our academic team visited the center in NIT Trichy, which features 12 industrial software and hardware labs spread over 20,000 square feet. The various learning tracks are designed for engineering, polytechnic and ITI students of any institute to practice in their domain, in order to enrich their knowledge and enhance their industry placement.
Recently, St. Joseph’s College signed an agreement with NIT Trichy towards utilization of CoE to support more students in the region, taking the total institutes having access to CoE to 40.
A four-day internship program was held for 60 students from Bharathidhasnar Matric Hr Secondary School, called “Catch them Young” , attendees gave high satisfaction rankings.
