Shaping the Future of Engineering Education in Cambodia
Cambodia has set the bar high with ambitious goals to build a high-tech workforce by 2050. Over the past two years Siemens has played an impactful role in supporting STEM and engineering education in Cambodia to support achieving that goal. Read to learn more about some of the key highlights from the collaboration!
Background: Support from Siemens for Cambodia’s engineering education
Siemens has a long history of more than 100 years in the ASEAN region, supporting education, government, and business across various industry sectors, including manufacturing, transportation, hydropower plant, automation, smart city, IoT solutions, electrification solutions, and automotive industries. One recent example of how Siemens supports industry in ASEAN is VinFast’s deployment of Siemens’s technologies portfolio to deliver cars ahead of schedule.
In particular, 2022 marked an important milestone between Siemens Digital Industries Software Pte Ltd. and Cambodia’s leadership – H.E Chea Vandeth and H.E Say Samal. An MoU was signed to leverage Siemens’ Xcelerator Academy products for engineering education and training which Siemens grants to partner schools. The Xcelerator Academy includes curriculum, academic licensed software, digital learning platform, certification programs, and community support of product knowledge which can be used by universities, TVET schools, high schools, and secondary schools across the country.
Two Years of Progress: Key Milestones and Achievements
The collaboration began with training in design and manufacturing. Notable resources included the use of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) using Solid Edge software, additive manufacturing/3D Printing, engineering design-and-prototyping projects, certification programs, and the available mechanical and electronics tools in Cambodia’s market. These resources enabled Cambodian students to work together in teams to build engineering projects.
Engineering Training and Certification
Following the partnership with Siemens DISW, 6 STEM schools (Institute of Technology of Cambodia, Cambodia Academy of Digital Technology, New Generation School Preah Sisowath, New Generation School Prek Leap, E2STEM Education Preah Yukunthor, and Liger Leadership Academy) were granted the Xcelerator Academy products for engineering training with direct support by STEAMING Cambodia.
Using the Engineering Project-Based Learning model, 685 students graduated from an engineering design class that teaches students skills in engineering drawing and assembly mechanical parts using Solid Edge. Out of the 685, 82% (560) passed the Solid Edge Certification exam certified by Siemens. By preparing the students for certification, the program bolsters graduates’ future employment opportunities in engineering design and product prototyping.
Engineering Projects
Innovation and creativity is about expanding oneself beyond the limit. The training by STEAMING Cambodia organizes several relevant engineering projects for students to have the opportunity for hands-on CAD modeling. In the course, students complete engineering design projects like Mini Wheel Robot, Wind Turbine, drone, Water Wheel, Wheel Chair, CNC model, scooter, e-bike, automotive parts, plastic products mold, and more.
One outstanding project designed and prototyped by an Expert Level student was SCARA Robot. Other projects designed by Expert Level students include TURBO Jet, Industrial Robot Arm, Hybrid Bulldozer, Electric Power Generator Genset, and many others.
Expectations for 2024 and beyond
Moving forward, the goal of the partnership is to encourage more young Cambodians to become interested in learning engineering. Education and training in CAD and additive manufacturing, as well as providing opportunities for engineering projects, will remain the top priorities for 2024. Empowering these new generations of engineers in Cambodia will in turn bolster the economy and create more jobs for local engineers and technicians. As this partnership continues, Siemens and Cambodian leadership hope to build the next generation of Cambodian engineers who are capable of leveraging the latest technologies along with locally-rooted thinking to identify and solve local problems.
