New book

My recent visit to California, to attend ESC, had many highlights, but a key one was when somebody handed me a book. This was the first time that I had seen a finished copy of Embedded Software: The Works, 2nd Edition. At that point, it had not yet been “officially” published, but the Elsevier/Newnes rushed a modest number of copies for sale at the show and for us to use in prize drawings. I really appreciated them making the effort.

The first edition of “The Works” was my second book, which I talked about here, so I guess this is my third. Although the experience of holding the first copy of my first book will never be repeated, it is very satisfying to see the completion of such a project.

I will be straight with you. This book is not a complete rewrite. What I did was go through all the articles, updating some, as appropriate, removing a few that seemed less relevant and adding some new ones that cover contemporary topics, like open source software. I hope that the book will continue to be of value to those who are new to embedded software, teachers of the subject and engineers who need background information on a variety of embedded software topics.

If you would like a copy, it is available now [in the US; very soon elsewhere] directly from the publishers or from your favorite online book seller. The ISBN is 0124158226. As with the first edition, all the royalties will be paid to a worthwhile charity.

  • I am Geroge Lee from China and have read your latest book related to embedded software by Google books. I am very interested in the last two charpters, especially the last one — multi-core/multi-os. I am working in ALi Corporation, a leading STB SoC provider. We plan to partner with your company Mentor Grapgics on embedded software and Android platform.
