NASCAR Analysis, RP & PLM at Hendrick Motorsports
Jim Wall, director of engine engineering at Hendrick Motorsports, presented at PLM Connection on analysis and PLM in NASCAR.
I caught up with him after his presentation for this video clip.
Jim noted that one of the biggest design challenges they face is “keeping up with the pace of change” to be a winning team.
One of the more interesting parts of his presentation was the use of stereolithography rapid prototyping. They produce a full scale resin V8 engine that can fire.
He noted that there is so much data created in their business that a big challenge is to manage that data along with the “technical memory” of their team. They leverage a wireless Teamcenter web client that allows them to record an issue right on the track that instantly creates a workflow so they can begin improvements as soon as possible.
Some compelling stats:
- 600 engine builds/year
- 71 CAD users
- 237 PDM users
- 37 GB data vault
- 2,200 problem reports
