Shapr3D for iPad Pro implements D-Cubed Geometric Constraint Solving

By JonR

Shapr3D is a Budapest-based startup with a 3D CAD tool designed specifically for iPad Pro. The company recently integrated D-Cubed 2D DCM to solve geometric constraints and provide their users with a more productive, touch/stylus-enabled sketching capability.

With D-Cubed 2D DCM, a Shapr3D sketch can be defined using dimensions and constraints, such as distances, angles and symmetries, which specify relationships between the sketch geometry.

Design variations are easily explored by modifying the values of dimensions. The result is an accurate, detailed design that is suitable for 3D modeling applications in product design and engineering.

According to István Csanady, founder and CEO of Shapr3D:

Shapr3D has maintained its pace of innovation by focusing attention on the sketching environment in this release, enabling users to rapidly create 2D profiles that can be swept, spun or lofted into 3D solids for subsequent modeling with Parasolid.

High-precision 3D CAD on mobile touch-screen devices

The introduction of Apple’s pressure-sensitive stylus on the iPad Pro enabled Shapr3D to pioneer high-precision 3D computer-aided design on mobile touch-screen devices. Key to Shapr3D’s success has been its focus on developing an intelligent user-interface that takes full advantage of the platform, and makes CAD more intuitive and accessible to iPad Pro users.

Shapr3D has added significant value to its 2D DCM integration using its development expertise in exploiting maximum benefit from the iPad Pro touch-screen interface.

For example, the app monitors the stylus and its relation to existing sketch geometry, which enables constraints to be applied automatically while the user is sketching, and infer which type of geometry the user intends to draw.  This new constraint snapping engine is illustrated opposite.

The benefit of licensing open software technology

Rather than wasting resources on re-inventing the wheel, Shapr3D has partnered with trusted providers of open software technologies to deliver proven capabilities. In addition to D-Cubed 2D DCM, Shapr3D previously licensed Parasolid and Tech Soft 3D’s HOOPS Exchange from Siemens PLM Software, to provide superior 3D modeling and data exchange functionality.

According to Jim Rusk, CTO, Siemens PLM Software

Shapr3D has developed a modeling application for the iPad Pro in remarkably little time. This shows how components like D-Cubed 2D DCM can help companies to stay focused on their own development expertise and make innovative software releases to their end-users much more quickly.
