A 'Visionary' Position for Polarion in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Application Development Life Cycle Management

By rizzos

I was very pleased to find that Polarion Software has once again been designated as a “Visionary” in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Application Development Life Cycle Management for its application lifecycle management solutions. Polarion has been included in Gartner reporting for several years now – and we feel we have a positive trend.

We believe that Gartner’s analysts recognize the benefit in supporting ISO and FDA standards, as well as the value of Polarion’s TüV certification. In our opinion, Polarion’s position is even stronger for companies looking for ALM in the mechatronics space.

I saw very little in the way of downside for us in the report. Yes, a product with our breadth and flexibility is going to have a learning curve and certainly it’s a legitimate concern. Perhaps the best that can be said about it is what actual customers tell us:

“It convinced us with its fast installation and implementation, and the ease of use in our day-to-day work. With Polarion we achieved transparency on all levels of development and we got fast acceptance in the teams.” – Andreas Deuter, Phoenix Contact Electronics

“With the advent of ISO 26262, we were forced to use new tools for requirements engineering and the whole software development process. With Polarion we found a solution that not only fulfills these requirements, but that is also intuitive and easy to use. – Stefan Schorer, Gigatronik

“During the implementation phase, the ease of use and ease of administration were extremely helpful. These strengths netted us a very high user acceptance from the start, and enabled us to migrate our users faster than initially planned.” – Werner Motzet, WaveLight (Alcon Group)

“In comparison to other systems, working with Polarion ALM is a walk in the park. – Phillippe Meuli, Swisslog

The above quotes are pretty typical of the feedback we get from our customers. (Emphasis in all cases is mine). There definitely is a learning curve, but most customers say they don’t find it a major obstacle to adoption.

Hurdlers: Agile and Compliant? Think about it! It’s also true that if Agile Software Development is the main (only?) thing you care about, then sure, there are more “agile-centric” tools out there. In our Agile software development solutions (to which we added someenhancements in our version 2014 releasewe are not only thinking about Agile for coders. We are looking at areas that today’s agile-focusedsolutions don’t even begin to touch: Enterprise Agile. That is: how can your process be both Agile and Compliant? How can you be more agile when you must develop requirements and testing in a highly standards-centric and/or regulated industry?

We believe that Gartner’s recognition of our mechatronics and standards compliance support touches this indirectly, but Enterprise Agile is an area where I see Polarion breaking new ground — ground which industry analysts are not yet talking about. We shall see!

In any case, I’m personally proud of Polarion’s steady momentum, and I’m sure that our continuing expansion in the global markets, plus the technical partnerships we are putting together, will ultimately lead to a listing in the Leaders quadrant. Once again… we shall see!
