LOC optimizes global collaboration for business growth

LOC (London Offshore Consultants) Group is a recognized leader in the area of risk reduction in the shipping and offshore energy industry. LOC focuses on transportation and construction in the marine environment, advising on technical matters when accidents and disputes arise. With the structural design and analysis of offshore structures, the ability to predict performance in a range of circumstances is critical. This is a specialist area of the LOC Group company, Longitude Engineering.

Core tools that analyze performance and strength of marine structures, which are typically built specifically for each application, are critical and Longitude Engineering relies on Femap for global and local finite element analysis.

With over 35 offices worldwide, LOC has access to many potential markets. Initially however, the use of Femap within LOC was limited to just one of Longitude Engineering’s sites. Other sites did not have access to this capability and clearly there was a huge opportunity to strengthen the company’s engineering capacity and be more consistent when bidding for multi-national contracts. With licenses available across a wide area network in five different time zones, consultants across the globe could standardize on Femap. This also allowed for a “follow the sun” efficiency for LOC’s global workforce with engineers in each successive time zone taking over usage of licenses.

For LOC, one of the outstanding benefits of Femap was ease of use. The use of Femap is helping to achieve engineering consistency across the group, with LOC operating at a high level, and Longitude Engineering going into the full detail. Femap can be used to show what forces a structure can withstand, or where material can be reduced. LOC’s engineers can quickly identify areas of high stress and easily redesign a structure to reduce them. The approach is helping LOC to reduce its overall s peed of development, helping to meet deadlines with engineers able to pass models from one office to another maximizing their effectiveness.
