The perfect cure for the winter blues…

Behind the scenes at Princess Yachts in Plymouth, UK

While the winter wind continues to whip outside my office window, I find myself dreaming of balmier times: like this August, when we got to shoot this really cool movie about Michal Tomaszczyk, an NVH engineer at Princess Yachts, who is bringing some pretty cutting-edge NVH practices into the world of yacht development.

Not only did we get to see Simcenter Testlab and Simcenter SCADAS in action on an actual Princess Yacht, we also chatted to Princess Yachts veterans, Nick Williamson and Paul Roach, who helped paint the picture of what the world of luxury yacht manufacturing used to look like before the days of NXTeamcenter, and Simcenter.

And I have to admit that Werner Custers and I had a blast shooting this. It is quite an exceptional experience to see how many engineers, designers, artisans, interior decorators, carpenters and numerous other talented people put their passion into these magnificent boats every single day.

IMG_1459.jpgView from the officeBefore we headed back to Belgium, we visited the South Yard site where the Princess 35M and Princess 40M are lovingly constructed. And we even got to take a peak at the spectacularly restored, Project 31, the first Princess Yacht success, constructed over fifty years.

After you get done watching the team create and build these masterpieces of artisanal yacht luxury, sit back, close your eyes and dream of sailing away on a balmy summer day, with a gin-and-tonic in hand…

And your copy of Simcenter News

And, before I forget, if you want to read more about this, visit our Marine Performance Engineering page and download a copy of the latest Simcenter News. This Marine Special features the full cover story that goes along with the Princess Yachts video as well as a plethora of other exciting marine stories, like the innovative Becker Mewis Duct®, a novel power-saving device developed using Simcenter STAR-CCM+.

I might also add that there is an excellent feature article about how the China Classification Society (CCS) has opted to create a new marine engineering software using Simcenter 3D and NX. And race fans will certainly want to check out how the Simcenter portfolio helped push the innovation envelop in the development of the America’s Cup Land Rover BAR racing yacht.

So if you are in frozen Europe, I hope this warms you up a bit. If you are like me, I bet you’ll be inspired to start making those summer holiday plans. Ummm….I wonder how much it costs to charter a Princess Yacht?

A very special thanks to the entire team at Princess Yachts who were so kind and helpful during this entire project. We are already looking forward to the next one. (See their home page for a hint…)
