These challenging operating conditions can have a significant effect on the minimum power requirements and structural strength requirements of a vessel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until now, prediction of these requirements has relied almost exclusively on physical experiments. Now, however, the advance of CFD is enabling engineers to <strong>efficiently explore ship-ice interaction in a virtual environment.<\/strong>\u00a0 Discrete Element Modeling (DEM), a method for the modeling of the collective dynamics of a large number of particles, can be used to consider ice for the simulation of flows around ships or offshore structures. CFD is particularly useful when studying interaction effects because of the complete control over defined operating conditions. As well as this, metrics can be computed separately based on various effects, e.g. the decomposition of resistance into hydrodynamic, aerodynamic, contact and interaction forces. This gives greater confidence in predictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"901\" height=\"615\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.stage.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/10\/ship_ice1_cropped.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8025\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.stage.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/10\/ship_ice1_cropped.jpg 901w, https:\/\/blogs.stage.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/10\/ship_ice1_cropped-600x410.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blogs.stage.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/10\/ship_ice1_cropped-768x524.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 901px) 100vw, 901px\" \/><figcaption>A ship advancing through brash ice<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At the<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" SNAME Maritime Convention 2019 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/snameconvention.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> SNAME Maritime Convention 2019<\/a>, Philipp Mucha will present a general computational framework for the simulation of ships advancing through brash ice, using Simcenter STAR-CCM+. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/philipp-mucha-26a80b144\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Philipp&#039;s paper (opens in a new tab)\">Philipp&#8217;s paper<\/a> shows how the DEM model was applied to predict ice-induced resistance of a bulk carrier and explore implications for propulsion and structural responses.
