{"id":7274,"date":"2013-10-09T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-10-09T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/Solid-Edge-Blog\/Using-STL-to-3D-Print-in-Solid-Edge\/ba-p\/6005"},"modified":"2019-09-27T13:31:39","modified_gmt":"2019-09-27T13:31:39","slug":"using-stl-to-3d-print-in-solid-edge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.stage.sw.siemens.com\/solidedge\/using-stl-to-3d-print-in-solid-edge\/","title":{"rendered":"Using STL to 3D Print in Solid Edge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P><IMG src=\"https:\/\/siemensplm.i.lithium.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/1975iA264F18D10254530\/image-size\/medium?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"ScreenHunter_527 Oct. 04 13.13.jpg\" title=\"ScreenHunter_527 Oct. 04 13.13.jpg\" align=\"center\" \/><\/P><br \/>\n<P>Those of you that follow me on&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/burhop\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">twitter&nbsp;<\/A>or&nbsp;<a title=\"Mark Burhop on Google+\" href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/u\/0\/110145082395232472715\/posts\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Google +<\/A>&nbsp;likely know I have a few home projects running around 3D printing.&nbsp; Many of you have high end <a title=\"Stratasys Web page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.stratasys.com\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Stratasys <\/A>or <a title=\"3D Systems\" href=\"http:\/\/3dprinters.3dsystems.com\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">3D Systems<\/A> machines at work and know outputting to these machines from Solid Edge has been available for many years and actually works pretty well.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>What is changing is that the low cost of the new machines from places like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.makerbot.com\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Makerbot<\/A>, 3D Systems (<a href=\"http:\/\/cubify.com\/cube\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Cube<\/A>), and a host of other companies have more people wanting to 3D print from <a title=\"Solid Edge\" href=\"http:\/\/solidedge.com\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Solid Edge<\/A>.&nbsp; It\u2019s <a title=\"Great video to see what students can do\" href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/T7PK8sWwixI\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">great for students<\/A> who need a physical object and more common for designers to have 3D printers in their office for some basic <a title=\"How Ford Is Using 3-D Printing To Save Millions Of Dollars\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagogrid.com\/news\/ford-3-d-printing-makerbot-millions\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">prototyping<\/A>.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Below is a simple video I did this weekend for one of my projects on how to create an STL file (the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kBzGm8excrg\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">new Youtube functionality<\/A> is really is pretty handy). Because STL is faceted and unitless, it can sometimes create some confusion the first time it is used:<STRIKE><\/STRIKE><\/P><br \/>\n<P><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-embed-center video-embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Akq6_q8JcsM\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" title=\"Video\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>If you want a little more background on the project, here is the broken joint on the chair my friend brought to me this Saturday (note, if you get a 3D printer, this will happen a lot <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"smileyhappy\" class=\"emoticon emoticon-smileyhappy\" src=\"https:\/\/siemensplm.i.lithium.com\/i\/smilies\/16x16_smiley-happy.png\" alt=\"Smiley Happy\" title=\"Smiley Happy\" \/>&nbsp;)<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><IMG src=\"https:\/\/siemensplm.i.lithium.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/1977i6914DD82D15FC9AE\/image-size\/medium?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"ScreenHunter_510 Sep. 22 12.16.jpg\" title=\"ScreenHunter_510 Sep. 22 12.16.jpg\" align=\"center\" \/><\/P><br \/>\n<P>The design itself (see video) was something put together in about 30 minutes which I then printed on my SolidDoodle printer (about $600).&nbsp;
