Design for IOT broadcast: Designing your products for IOT
Most of the current discussion around IOT isn’t about design, but about the outputs of IOT: Big Data, how to store it, how to mine it for useful information, etc.Which begs the question, how do you know which data to gather, did you design your product in such a way to gather the data you wanted, how do you know it’s good, etc.–i.e. designing the product for IOT.
Alan Behrens at Taxal and Disruptive LIVE invited Chris Stecki (CEO PHM Technolgies) and myself to have a conversation on designing/engineering your IOT products for the outcome you want. It included a discussion on fundamental engineering challenges associated with designing surprise-free complex industrial IoT projects, describes the inherent ‘waste’ and limitations of current IoT development processes (i.e. uncontrolled sensor multiplication like this picture), and outlines the advantages of a Lean approach to IOT design using model-based systems engineering analysis/techniques supported by PHM’s MADe technologies that are integrated with Siemens PLM Solutions–providing a forward looking means (vs backward looking) to design IOT into your products to get the data you really want by making sure the right sensors are in the right places to give you the information/coverage you want in a safe/reliable way.
Watch below to see how Siemens PLM is integrating proactive Design for IOT into the product lifecycle. You can see the full conversation at Disruptive LIVE or on YouTube.
