Which vehicles are driving vehicle electrification?

By ToniB

Vehicle electrification extends far beyond automobiles. Buses, trucks and even boats will help make electric vehicles mainstream. Some vehicles, such as long distance trucking, will take longer because the infrastructure isn’t in place.

We recently spoke with Dave Lauzun, vice president of transportation and automotive at Siemens PLM Software, about what’s happening with electric vehicles and which vehicles we’ll likely see electrified first. He said that most consumer delivery vehicles and service vehicles don’t travel far on a daily basis, so they’re an ideal candidate to begin.

“They go from their depot, to their daily routes, and then back to the depot at the end of the day,” he said. It’ll be delivery trucks and buses that lead the way for electrification because they often have fixed, smaller routes, allowing for ample charging time at night.

Urban areas and fleet vehicles will likely see a major increase in electrification. From there, electrification will stretch to highways where larger transportation vehicles can take advantage of charging, he added.

In this video, hear Dave discuss how electrification is poised to take over every aspect of the transportation industry, beginning with fleet vehicles like electric buses and electric vans.

Watch other videos from our conversation with Dave Lauzun about electric vehicles, where we discuss easing consumer anxiety about electric vehicles, resolving challenges with electric vehicle technology and electric vehicles’ role in the current automotive revolution. Stay tuned for more.
