Podcast series: Intelligent performance engineering (Part 2) – understanding multiphysics simulation

In this second podcast in our series on Intelligent Performance Engineering (IPE), we take a deeper dive into multiphysics simulation differentiators. We are joined again by our experts, Rahul Garg, Vice President for Industrial Machinery & SMB Program, and Giulio Camauli, Simcenter Industry Solutions manager at Siemens Digital Industries Software.

Our previous inaugural IPE podcast we discussed at a high level the evolution of technology within the machinery industry and the key trends that shape it. We covered the three key differentiators: multiphysics simulation, integrated design and simulation and closed-loop validation. To learn more from this initial overview, please listen to the first podcast.

This second podcast focuses on multiphysics and how simulation integrates into the industrial machinery industry. New materials and methods of manufacturing are being implemented with increasing product complexity. These products must be lighter and smaller, working more efficiently — a standard for the market. Multiphysics simulations allow for exploring the real reward physical interaction that complex products may encounter.

This interaction impacts product performance, safety and longevity. Other factors include fluid forces, thermal effects, structural integrity, and electromagnetic radiation that impact a machine’s performance. Isolating and examining these forces does not always reflect an accurate prediction of product behavior. Therefore, it’s essential to consider all the loads simultaneously during real usage simulation.

It’s vital to consider an essential aspect of designing industrial equipment by verifying and validating its performance before reaching the customer. It costs significantly less to fix a problem during the design phase than later in the product development cycle. So, the industrial OEMs adopt a collection of digital simulation and analysis tools to understand how design choices affect the performance and failure modes for a component, a device or the complete machine.

Traditionally, there are manual handoffs between design and simulation processes. Designers frequently use design level simulation to provide a baseline design assessment for definitive advanced simulation needs. As equipment manufacturers deliver machines with faster cycle rates and compressed delivery schedules, teams must perform simulation upfront, rather than testing the sufficiency of multiple physical prototypes. Therefore, simulation and physical test must work together efficiently.
